In order to design a network that best meets the requirements for the business at hand the network technician should follow the steps in the system development life cycle. If all theses steps are followed then the network being designed should meet all the necessary requirements ensuring a optimized future proof network.

Analyses requirements
Some key aspects to consider when Analyzing the network
  • business requirements, constraints and applications 
  • Don't purchase any products until you get a good understanding of business goals and:
  •  Flow, load, behavior and quality of service(QoS)
  • look at the existing network before you think of any enhancements 
Logical Design 

  • Design a network typology
  • Select the correct switches and router protocols
  • Design models for addressing and Naming
  • Develop network securities 
  • Develop management strategies
Physical Design 
  • Selecting Technologies and devises for the network 
  • Cable layout 
  • Service providers(sp) 
Testing and Optimizing
  • Verify that the Network design meets the goals of the business 
  • Verify that the Service provider live up to their promised service
  • Use the Bandwidth efficiently 
Document the design 
  • IF you have been given a Request for Proposal(RFP) by the company  then you should respond in the exact format provided.
  • IF a RFP is not given you can make your own
  • When making your own RFP think about: 
  • describes requirments, looks at the existing network, both the logical and physical design, implementation plans and finally the overall budget. 
By following the System Development Life cycle the design Technician can reduce the risk of a failed network designs that do not meet the client's goals, needs and potential network growths.
